  • We began in May. We forgot to take a photo when they first arrived and were but tiny wormlike creatures. Here, at about a week old, they are full grown caterpillars.
  • Here you can see that several caterpillars have fastened themselves to the roof of the container and created their chrysalises to complete their metamorphosis/pupa stage.

  • After all of the chrysalises are formed, we reattach them to the inside of our butterfly pavilion.
  • This one attached itself to the plastic part of the container, through a hole in the paper ceiling, so we just pulled it gently off and set it on a paper towel. As we moved it, it shook a lot (a form of self preservation in the wild).
  • Here you can see a close up of the chrysalis after the butterfly has emerged from it. The chrysalis is torn where the butterfly forced it ope. You can see the red meconium the butterfly expelled shortly after emerging.

  • A fuzzy portrait of our first butterfly! We took our photos through the mesh of the pavilion.

  • Here you can see that two butterflies have emerged and two are remaining in their chrysalises.

  • This is the first time I have ever see a butterfly's proboscis. It was really exciting to see it curl out and in. Then a little creepy to see it feeling around as it looked for good juice.

  • The cat mostly ignored the butterflies, but we did have to keep an eye on her in the beginning as she was very curious.
  • What great timing! We were invited to join a field trip to the Wings of Wonderf butterfly pavilion in Independence, OR. We were lucky enough to travel with cousins!

  • The pavilion was around 92 degrees Fahrenheit and very humid, which made for beautiful flowers.
